Locs are a beautiful, intentional commitment — and we take that commitment seriously. Before you book, we want you to be fully informed about what to expect, what we look for, and how we work together to ensure your locs thrive from day one.
At Alotta Locs, every new guest begins with a loc consultation. This is not just a formality — it is the most important step in your journey. It protects your hair, your scalp, and your investment.
Step 1: The Loc Consultation
Why We Require a Loc Consultation
Loc consultations exist to determine the health of your hair and scalp before any service begins. During your consultation, your loctician will take time to go through your entire scalp — section by section — to assess its current condition.
If your loctician sees something that raises a concern, they will ask questions. This is not meant to alarm you — it is how we protect you. Not every potential client is a good candidate for locs at the time of their consultation, and that is okay. Your health always comes first.
What We Assess During Your Consultation
Scalp Health
We examine your scalp for dryness, buildup, irritation, or any signs of scalp disorders or disease. Healthy locs begin with a healthy scalp.
Hair Density & Texture
We evaluate your hair's natural density, curl pattern, and texture to determine the best loc method and starting technique for your hair type.
Existing Damage
We look for signs of breakage, thinning, traction damage, or chemical processing that may affect your ability to start locs safely right now.
Overall Hair Condition
We assess moisture levels, porosity, and overall strand integrity to ensure your hair is strong enough to begin the loc process.
Important to Know
Not Everyone Is Ready to Start Locs — and That's Okay
During your consultation, your loctician may identify conditions that make it unsafe or inadvisable to begin locs at this time. These are not permanent disqualifications — many can be addressed with proper care and treatment. However, we will never compromise your hair health to start a service.
Please note: If any of the following conditions are identified during your consultation, we may recommend postponing your service until the issue is properly addressed. This is always done with your best interest in mind.
Broken Locs
Existing locs that are severely broken or thinning at the root may not be candidates for repair or continuation without a rest period.
Patchy Areas
Uneven hair growth or bald patches may indicate an underlying condition that should be addressed by a dermatologist before starting locs.
Scalp Irritations
Active scalp irritations, sores, or open wounds require healing before any loc service can safely begin.
Scalp Diseases
Conditions such as psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, or fungal infections must be properly managed and cleared before locs are installed.
Thinning Hair
Significant thinning — especially around the edges or crown — may be worsened by the tension of loc installation and must be evaluated carefully.
Severe Traction Damage
Years of tight styles, extensions, or chemical services can cause traction alopecia. We will assess whether your hair has recovered enough to safely begin.
Head Lice
Any active infestation must be fully treated and cleared before any salon service. This protects you, other guests, and our team.
The Truth About Locs
Locs Are Not Low Maintenance
One of the most common misconceptions about locs is that they require little to no upkeep. This is simply not true. Locs require consistent, intentional care — and the level of care you give them directly impacts how healthy and beautiful they become over time.
You will still need to wash, moisturize, and maintain your locs on a regular schedule. Neglecting your locs can lead to buildup, mold, thinning, and breakage — all of which are preventable with the right routine.
It is imperative that when you select a professional loctician, you receive proper education and information about your specific hair type and loc method. This knowledge will help your journey become successful and ensure you continue to have flourishing locs for years to come.
Regular Washing
Locs should be washed every 1–2 weeks depending on your scalp type, activity level, and product use. Clean locs are healthy locs.
Moisture & Hydration
Locs need moisture just like loose natural hair. Use lightweight, residue-free products to keep your strands hydrated without causing buildup.
Retightening Schedule
Depending on your loc method, retightening appointments are typically needed every 4–8 weeks to maintain neat, healthy new growth.
Scalp Care
A healthy scalp is the foundation of healthy locs. Keep your scalp clean, balanced, and free of excessive product buildup between appointments.
Nighttime Protection
Always sleep with a satin or silk bonnet or pillowcase to reduce friction, prevent frizz, and protect your locs while you rest.
Patience & Commitment
Locs go through stages — budding, teenage, and mature. Each stage requires patience. Trust the process and stay consistent with your care routine.

There is a lot of misinformation out there about locs — especially when it comes to length, growth, and extensions. We want to make sure you come in with accurate expectations so your journey is set up for success from the very beginning.
"Extensions will help my locs grow longer faster"
The Truth
This is one of the most common myths we hear. Hair extensions do not promote hair growth. In fact, when extensions are not properly assessed before application, they can cause extensive damage — including traction alopecia, breakage, and thinning at the root. Length added with extensions is cosmetic only; it does not reflect the health or growth of your natural hair underneath.
"I can start locs with extensions to add length"
The Truth
At Alotta Locs, we do not provide hair extensions as part of our loc services. We start your loc journey with your natural hair — period. This is intentional. Starting with your own hair ensures that your locs are healthy, properly formed, and built on a strong foundation from day one.
"My locs will look long and full right away"
The Truth
Locs go through a process. In the early stages — budding and the teenage phase — your locs may look shorter, thinner, or less defined than you imagined. This is completely normal. With consistent care and patience, your locs will mature into full, flourishing strands. Trust the journey.
We start every client off with their natural hair. This is not a limitation — it is the foundation of a healthy, lasting loc journey.

What to Look for in a Loctician
Selecting the right loctician is one of the most important decisions you will make on your loc journey. The person who starts and maintains your locs will have a direct impact on their health, growth, and longevity. Here is what to look for:
Proper Education & Training
Your loctician should have formal training in the specific loc method they are performing — whether that is Sisterlocks, traditional locs, starter locs, or another technique.
Portfolio of Work
Ask to see before-and-after photos of real clients. A confident, skilled loctician will have a portfolio that demonstrates their range and consistency.
Transparent Pricing
Pricing should be clear and communicated upfront. Understand what is included in your service, what deposits are required, and what the cancellation policy is.
Open Communication
Your loctician should be willing to answer your questions, explain their process, and make you feel comfortable and informed at every appointment.
